Bella swan is one of the main characters in this story, she is quiet and somewhat shy. She moved from Phoenix, Arizona to small town called Forks, Washington to live with her dad Charlie. In the course of the story, she meets the Cullens, and one in particular, Edward. On her first day, she has to sit with Edward in Biology, but he treats her as if he hates her by gripping the edge of the table and moving far away from her. She doesn’t see him for weeks after that, but when he comes back, he is nicer and actually talks to her. She realizes something is different about him when he saves her from Tyler Crowley’s car, even though he was standing four cars away, he got to her in a split second. Over the course of the story, Bella finds out that Edward is a vampire, but she is in love with him. He tells her that he and his family are good vampires, vegetarians even, because they only drink animal blood. The climax part is when the Cullen’s take Bella to play baseball, and three other vampires, (James, Victoria, and Laurent) find them. James discovers she is a human, he tries to jump at her but Edward protects her and sets James off. James then goes on the hunt to find Bella. Just as James is biting her Edward and the rest of his family come in and save her. In the end when Bella is in the hospital, Edward tells her mom that she fell down 2 flights of stairs and out of a window, and thats why shes so badly bruised :)  |
The Cullens are a family of vampires who recently moved back to Forks. They are determined to be good vampires so they only eat animals, not people. They call it their “vegetarian” diet. Edward, the oldest except for Carlisle, was the first to be changed. Carlisle saved him from the Spanish Influenza. Esme was the next to join the family. She’s the mother of the family, even thought she isn’t any of their real mothers. She was also saved from sickness by Carlisle. Rosalie and Emmett were next in the family. Rosalie came from a rich family, and was almost dead because her fiancé was drunk and beat her up. She was lying on the ground when she was found. Emmett was found by Rosalie. He was mauled by a bear, so Rosalie ran him back to Carlisle to be changed. Alice and jasper came last. Alice doesn’t know where she came from, she just woke up and was a vampire. She saw in the future that she would find Jasper and they would go off to find the Cullens together. Jasper was in the army before he became a vampire, as he was evacuating women and children from a part of a country when he came across three beautiful, yet dangerous, women. They were vampires and that’s how he was changed into a vampire. Edward cannot stay away from Bella, so he travels away from Forks for a week or two to hunt and so that he won’t hurt her. He doesn’t breathe around Bella either. He falls in love with her and he never has the urge to kill her again after he has to get the poison out of her system. Edward’s talent is reading minds, everyone’s but Bella’s. Carlisle is the most controlled, because self-control is his talent. He's had many years in the hospital business and is used to the smell of blood. Esme has the gift to love unconditionally. She is very caring and kind. Rosalie on the other hand doesn’t like Bella, because she never wanted to be a vampire but she had no choice, and Bella just wants to throw her human life all away to become one. Rosalie is very beautiful and that’s her gift. Emmett is competitive, loveable, and kids around a lot. His gift is that he is very big and strong. Alice is small and sees into the future, but the future can always change based on peoples decisions. Jasper was the last and the most un-accustomed to their “vegetarian” diet. He has the ability to change emotions in the room or calm people down. |
Jacob Black is one of the lesser characters in this book. He is a Quileute Indian and lives on the reservation in Forks. He also goes to school there. His best friends are Paul, Jarred, and Embry, who also live on the reservation. Jacob’s dad, Billy Black, believes in all the legends and doesn’t like the Cullens at all. Jacob doesn’t believe in any of it though. Jacob likes Bella even though she is about two years older than him. He doesn’t play much of a big part in the story until New Moon, when Edward leaves. In the end when Bella and Edward go to prom, Jacob's dad pays him $20 and bribed with an auto part to go to their prom and warn Bella. He told Jacob to tell her that she should break up with her boyfriend, to tell her please, and that “Well be watching”.  James, Victoria, and Laurent are the bad vampires in the story. James is the real leader, even though Laurent is supposedly the leader. He's a tracker, which means that he can track anything or anyone very well. When he finds out Bella is a human, that when he springs into action using his tracking skills. He finds her and leads her to her old ballet studio. Victoria is James’ mate. She has fire red hair that you could spot a long way away. She has the features of a cat, and she moves like one too. She is very quick, agile, and stealthy. She leads the police away when “animals” kill the security guard and Wayland and the police go on a search. Laurent is on his own in the group. He isn’t as evil as James and doesn’t go on the hunt for Bella like him, but warns the Cullens about him. They all have ruby-red eyes because they don’t feed on animals.  |
